Jonathan Headen is a native of Dekalb County Georgia - where his first introduction to music at a very young age through DeKalb County School System. He started playing the piano in the 4th grade, and started playing percussion in the 6th, through the band program. He was introduced to the bassoon came through participation in the band program at Southwest Dekalb High School, as well as the county-wide Youth Orchestra Program. In High School, he studied bassoon privately with Shelly Unger and played second principal bassoon in The Metropolitan Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra. Jonathan earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Valdosta State University in 2004. At VSU, he studied bassoon with Matthew Morris and Scott Poole, and spent two summers at the Master Works Music Festival in Houghton, N.Y. – where he met and took lessons from some of the country’s best bassoonists. During his studies at VSU, Jonathan performed regularly with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra and did a guest performance with the Georgia Coastal Symphony. In his third year of undergraduate study, Jonathan was winner of the first annual department-wide concerto competition, a victory which allowed him to perform solo with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra. In 2006, Jonathan earned a masters degree in bassoon performance from Kent State University (Ohio), where he studied with David Debolt and played principle bassoon in the Kent State University Orchestra. While at Kent State, he competed in the Tuesday Musical Society’s State-Wide Scholarship Competition, and achieved a first-place finish in the woodwind division. As a result of this achievement, he was featured in a recital with other winners from throughout the state of Ohio. In May of 2008, Jonathan completed the Artist Diploma Program in Bassoon at the Boston Conservatory, where he studied for two years with Suzanne Nelson, the second principle bassoonist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. At the Boston Conservatory, he is the principal bassoonist with the Boston Conservatory Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and plays in other chamber groups. In August 2010, Jonathan started teaching in Valdosta City Schools System, at Newbern Middle School, where he was the chorus and musical theatre instructor. Jonathan is currently working in Valdosta City Schools System, where he is the chorus at Valdosta High School. Jonathan is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
