What is Title I?

Valdosta High School is identified as a Title I school as part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA). Title I is designed to support State and local school reform efforts to improve teaching and learning for students. Title I programs must be based on effective means of improving student achievement and include strategies to support parental involvement. All Title I schools must jointly develop with all parents a written parental involvement policy.

Description of School Parental Involvement Plan

Vision: Valdosta High School Parent Involvement will engage all parents/guardians in the educational process and create a collaborative effort between the home and school to help students achieve.

Mission: Valdosta High School Parent Involvement will create multiple opportunities for all parents/guardians to become involved in their child’s education which will increase student achievement, lower dropout rates, increase graduation rates and create students who graduate from Valdosta High School college and career ready for post- secondary options.

  • Planning for the Parent Involvement Plan begins at the end of each school year at the parent advisory meeting to make plans for the next fiscal year. All parents are invited to this annual May advisory meeting and asked to give suggestions for engagement activities and the parent compact in the upcoming school year.
  • Data is received from the annual parent evaluations that are sent home with students and available online each April . This feedback is used to further include information about what parents need/want to support academic learning at VHS.
  • VHS serves students at the local Girl’s Methodist Home. These caretakers are invited to all parent meetings and to the advisory by parent connect, notes sent home with students, Facebook posts and remind 101 texts. Input from these stakeholders helps VHS to better serve these youth and make a direct connection with the caregivers and the school.
  • Once a draft of the plan is completed, several meetings are held to allow parents to view the plan and make suggestions: Open House, Stakeholder/Parent Meeting, and PTO. The plan is available on the VHS website, in two parent resource centers (Freshman Academy and Main Lobby), and in the Parent Media Section of the Media Center.
  • Parents are asked to complete stakeholder feedback forms about the plan.

School Measures to Provide Required Assistance

  • Various meetings are held during the school year to explain the curriculum and assessments such as: Parent Expo, Junior/Senior College night, 8th grade registration night, AVID night and open house. Parents are provided additional resources to aid in student academic success in two convenient parent resource centers and a parent media section. Parents are encouraged to schedule parent conferences, check grades using the parent portal and discuss progress checkpoints every 4.5 weeks as grades are sent home.
  • Professional Learning is provided to teachers and other staff members on how to increase parent engagement during professional learning days held periodically during teacher’s planning. Faculty and staff members are provided with parent engagement information through email and direct links to parent trainings provided by GADOE. Teachers are encouraged to communicate with parents and document this communication by providing printed syllabus, parent-teacher conferences, updated websites, emails, phone calls and supplemental information sent home to aid in study and preparation for learning and assessments. Teachers are available during their planning periods, before and after school in order to meet with parents to discuss grades, assessments and strategies parents can employ to increase academic success.
  • Additional training is provided to the parent coordinator with monthly meetings with the LEA as well as attending other parent engagement related meetings/conferences.
  • High school transition strategies are presented to parents at an 8th grade registration meeting, 9th grade orientation, and Cat CAMP summer transition program
